Obnoxious Bird

Our loud music listening neighbor has been silent of late, but the obnoxious birds have not. It's been warm enough upstairs to open the windows a bit, but as I sit here typing my paper, I've been subjected to the birds. I don't know how many of them there are, or what kind they are, or even if they're birds (perhaps just a mystery animal?), but they sound like a squeaky gate. And they squeak and squeak and squeak and squeak all through the day and into the evening. rrrr

I'm a nerd

I really am. I was working on my paper on Friday, and I finished 18 pages. But I'm afraid I won't have enough space to write everything I need to write. It can be a maximum of 35 pages, and I'm sitting here wondering whether or not I can get away with 36. What kind of a person am I? Well, we'll see whether there are enough hours in the next week to write 35 pages, let alone 36. 7 days from now, I'd better be just about done, or I'll be hyperventilating.

I'm no Jimmy

But I have been working pretty hard. Expect very light blogging until the end of the semester. Some people are rushing it along, but I would like another week thrown in there somewhere - April 29 and May 2 are coming up waaaay too quickly.

gas

Am I the only one who recognizes how much gas costs? I was driving very happily in the left lane yesterday morning (passing some cars, not just hanging out there, which drives me crazy) when this little Suzuki (think Toyota Echo size) came up on me. I swear it thought it could just push me out of the way (I don't think it realizes just how much my car weighs). Anyway, just as I had finished passing the last car and contemplated pulling over, the Suzuki flew by me on the right and swooped in front of me. It then proceeded to drive away going what I conservatively estimate as 85. First, I didn't even know Suzuki's could GO 85 with their little lawn mower engines, and second, I wonder how it feels to be in a Suzuki going 85. I don't know much about Suzuki's, and maybe they're good cars, but I'm a bit of a car snob, so when I think Suzuki, good thoughts don't float into my head. I'm picturing Angie's sad old Neon with the mildew smell. Anyway, do you think the little Suzuki was thinking, "I think I can, I think I can..." and trying not to fall apart? Good thing there aren't any hills on the beltline.

On a side note, a red Taurus like vehicle also passed me going quite quickly on the way to work, and a Mazda tried to run me over on the way home. Don't they realize that they made the speed limit 55 in the 70s for a reason? Driving 85 is like throwing money out the window when gas costs $2.30 a gallon. Is it going to kill you to get somewhere 5 minutes later? Accelerate gently and smoothly, shift sooner rather than later if you drive a standard, and don't jam on the gas if you drive an automatic.

On a further side note, the first stall is almost always cleaner than the middle stall, and women's bathrooms are usually dirtier than men's when considering public restrooms.

I hope they were on a schedule

It was 45 degrees and rainy this morning while I waited for the bus. I looked across the street and saw a whole bunch of sprinklers going. I hope no one knowingly turned them on.

I like potato chips as much as the next girl

or maybe not. When I got on the bus today, a girl was eating potato chips. But not with her hands. She had one of those small bags you get out of a vending machine and she was pouring the chips into her mouth. At one point, she had a few too many, so she kind of dropped them back in. I'm really not sure why I was staring (you're not supposed to stare at strangers), but I think it was just too fascinating for me to see this girl eat the chips. Once she finished the first bag, she opened a second and did the same thing. I'm pretty impressed that she didn't pour them all out on her lap (as I probably would have ended up doing), but really, was she so hungry that she couldn't eat them a few at a time?

on a side note, it was 80 today, but it's not supposed to get above 60 for the next 3 days. :( i want to get a tan! of course, bad weather means no desire to sit outside and lounge around. bibilographic essay, here i come!

Groceries

We went to Harris Teeter today, the fancy grocery store, because they had strawberries on sale for 98 cents a pound. For anyone who doesn't pay attention to strawberry prices, that's a good deal. When we were all finished, we had a fairly large cart full of items. I don't really like to go to Harris Teeter because they bag your groceries for you, and I prefer to do it myself (unless I'm in a hurry). Well, when I'm by myself they usually ask if I need any help getting them to my car. No, thank you, I think I can lift a gallon of milk. Well, today, with Andy standing right there, they asked if I wanted to "drive up" (ie they would stand there outside the door with my cart while I drove up to get the groceries). Is it that hard to wheel your cart across the flat parking lot for 10 seconds when you've already wheeled it up and down the aisles for the last half hour? I'm not sure, but even if I couldn't do it, I bet Andy could. And either way, you still have to put the groceries in the car. I'd rather do it in the safety of the parking lot than with cars driving up and down the main driveway in front of the store.

Well, I'm supposed to be working on my paper... 10 pages due Monday, and I'm almost there, but 25-35 pages due 3 weeks from yesterday. I think I'd better aim higher than 10.

Opossum runs wild in the library

I received the following email because I'm still somehow signed up for the library staff listserv ... I think it's pretty self explanitory, but I have two questions 1, what is an opossum, and how does it get into a library? 2, do they have opossum problems in other states? (i know they talked about them on the Beverly Hillbillies, so does that mean that they are a southern animal? I have no idea!)

Animal Problem

A report of an opossum on the seventh floor of DH Hill Library. A Facilities Pest Control Officer arrived and removed the opossum from the building.

Living History Sites

I have to give a presentation about them for my Writing! class. I'm not sure what giving a presentation has to do with writing, but I'm not sure what a lot of the class has to do with writing. Anyway, what do you say about them? They seem pretty self explanatory to me - it's a bunch of people dressed in costumes telling you what may or may not be true about their site. Yeah, amazing, it might not be the truth - it all depends on how much history they really want to tell. That's a big controversy about Williamsburg, although I've never been there so can't comment. For a long time, they neglected the whole slavery thing, but I think they've fixed it. In any case, what you see at those sites isn't necessarily the truth anyway because we can't know exactly what happened. And really, do you think you want to be in the same room with someone who bathes once a week and works with cows? I don't think so - but that's real history.
